The Importance of Positive Mental Health

What is mental health?

Everybody has mental health just like everybody has physical health. Mental health includes your social, emotional, and psychological well-being. It influences how we think, feel and act. It also influences how we relate to others, handle stress, and make choices.

Studies have shown that having positive mental health may reduce or prevent mental disorder symptoms in some individuals.

Research shows that approaching mental health from a wellness standpoint promotes healthier acceptance of the self, external circumstances, and perception of the world. Having positive mental health means more than not having a mental health problem or illness—it includes many things that help us to live well and cope with the challenges we experience throughout our lives.

Positive mental health is equally important for people without disorder symptoms because it can serve as a protective barrier.

Adversity is bound to strike at some point or another in life and a positive practice helps people cope in times of crisis. It is my strong belief that we all can have daily positive mental health practices.

Some evidenced based techniques that can help you maintain a positive mental health.

  • Practicing Meditation & Mindfulness

  • Emotional Literacy (understanding your emotions and the relation between them and the world around you)

  • Body movement (exercise, walking, dancing)

  • Healthy relationships (effective communication, trust, respect)

  • Self-Care (prioritize rest, set healthy boundaries at work and home)

  • Prepare healthy meals (a Mediterranean diet has been proven to aid in positive mental health)
